Designing how devices talk among themselves

Samsung Electronics

Samsung engaged Experientia to explore device-to-device connectivity across the US, UK and Germany. We explored the near-future of how devices connect and communicate through qualitative research, frameworks and scenarios on how convergence might occur.

3 things to know

1.Experientia explored how devices connect and communicate with each other, with ethnographic research in the US, UK and Germany.

  1. We looked at how gesture and proximity might become new ways for people and devices to interact.

  2. We delivered concept scenarios and a UX strategic roadmap, visualizing opportunities for the next 6 months to 4 years.

We conducted extensive qualitative research in each target country including market landscaping, expert interviews, extreme user interviews and participatory design workshops. The interaction paradigms explored during the research and ideation phases included gesture and proximity based interactions.

From the fieldwork insights, we developed a Contextual Convergence UX Framework to connect the analysis concretely to the concept development. We captured 50 thematic ideas and created 9 scenarios focusing on different areas of the UX convergence framework. These tools were used to illustrate current behaviors and opportunities to client-side stakeholders and supplemented the framework with detailed examples.

The framework offers a basis to illustrate current behaviors, pain points and needs as well as recommendations for D2D UX innovation. This tool provides fundamental support when designing UX convergence, summarizing the relevant activity steps.

The project resulted in concept scenarios and a UX strategic roadmap, visualizing opportunities for the next 6 months to 4 years.
